Solar Thermal Panel Systems

Solar Thermal Panel systems use energy from sunlight to generate heat water for your home.

This is different from Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels which use the sun's rays to produce electricity.

Solar Thermal Panels - How They Work

Solar Thermal Panels fitted to the roof of your home collect heat from the sun, even on cloudy days, and transfers this heat via a heat transfer system to a dedicated solar hot water cylinder typically in your roof space. Water within the solar hot water cylinder is heated and is stored for use as and when required. Your existing hot water cylinder will need to be replaced with one that is suitable for solar water heating but in the majority of cases this should not affect your current boiler and heating system as most conventional systems are compatible with solar water heating.

Is My Home Suitable?

A Solar Photovoltaic system can be supplied to almost any home.

However the following situations may mean that this form of renewable energy is unsuitable for your needs:

  • You do not have a roof that is south east to south west facing and receives sunshine for the majority of the day
  • Your roof space does not exceed five square metres
  • If you home does not already have a metered electricity supply
  • If you do not own the freehold of your property or cannot secure the agreement of your leaseholder or landlord
  • If your property is in the basement or on the middle floors of a building
  • If your property is listed or is in a conservation area
